Chapter Thirteen

Iwalked a little faster, wondering if I was letting my imagination run wild. Surely, it was just a coincidence; we just happened to catch a glance of each other across the street. Nothing more. I glanced behind me. His pace had picked up too. Was he following me? Did he remember me from the previous day?

My pace quickened. With the number of people at the parade, would the man be brave enough to try anything? I didn’t want to find out. After all, I still didn’t know if he was the one responsible for Eleanor’s “accident.”

I stopped at the corner of Main and First and glanced around, trying to act naturally. Ed was across the street. He was definitely glaring at me. The sinking feeling in my stomach only seemed to highlight the disconnect between Ed following me and the cheers and chatter filling the air with the continued strains of “Louie, Louie” playing in the background.

My muscles tensed. What did he want? I thought about running up First Street, away from the parade where he might lose my trail but decided to stay on Main Street around more people.

I glanced again across the street and didn’t see Ed. Had he given up?

Then I saw him, crossing the street between the 4-H Club float and the Shriners.

The man was following me.

I started jogging to the beginning of the parade, towards Sheriff King’s truck. I didn’t want to look back. Ed didn’t look like the healthiest of men, and even though exercise wasn’t usually on my daily routine, I knew I could outrun him.

I hoped.

The farther up Main Street I ran, the fewer people were on the sidewalk watching the parade. I didn’t have to dodge anyone, but I was more noticeable.

I was just a few yards away from the sheriff’s truck and ran as fast as I could. I ran up to the passenger door and knocked on the window.

“Let me in,” I said.

Sheriff King looked at me like I had lost my mind. Who goes around chasing police vehicles during the middle of a parade, demanding to be let in?

The truck stopped and Sheriff King rolled down the passenger window.

“What are you doing?” he asked. He sounded more confused than angry.

“Someone’s following me,” I said.

“Get in,” he said with a sigh.

I opened the door and pulled myself into the passenger seat.

“Just remember to wave at people,” the sheriff said dryly. “Who’s following you?”

“The man I bumped into at the haunted house ride,” I said.

Nick chuckled and said, “You mean the man who caught you snooping around private property?”

“That’s not funny,” I said. “He was across the street from me when the Goat Float passed. He saw me and started following me.”

“How do you know he was following you?” Nick continued to smile and wave at the parade’s onlookers.

“Because I started walking faster,” I replied. “He was trying to keep up with me.”

“Don’t forget to wave.”

I forced the best smile I could and waved my hand like a deranged beauty pageant contestant who had just run several blocks.
